Clean water is one of the most important issues facing all of humanity. It is infinitely more important than oil, gas, and other energy sources. After all, you cannot drink gasoline for survival, but all of us need water to live.

The challenge of removing biofilm from the inside of water pipes is nothing new. A variety of chemical compounds have been used over the years, including most that have some residual and/or harmful side effects. However, there is one compound that is quite simple and extremely effective—it is a salt-water combination that is pH balanced and electrolyzed for potency. In fact, it is so efficacious that
it is deemed to be 100 times more powerful than bleach. It has been recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protectional Agency (EPA) as well. At the same time, this compound (also known as “hypochlorous acid” or HOCl) is completely safe for humans, plants, and animals. More importantly, it is known as one of the best cleansers for biofilm in water lines, throughways, and pipes.
Added to the list of operative and effective qualities, HOCl is a recommended “disinfectant” against COVID-19 and other related viruses. In fact, even the National Institutes of Health (NIH) promoted a paper mentioning the EPA and advocating the following:
On contact with the virus, a disinfectant agent changes the protective protein coat, which loses its structure and aggregates, forming clumps of proteins with other viruses.9 , 10 Currently, the US Environmental
Protection Agency has recommended numerous disinfectants against COVID-19 including hypochlorous acid (HOCl).11
In that same paper, the NIH also says:
HOCl is an endogenous substance in all mammals and is effective against a broad range of microorganisms.
HOCl selectively binds with the unsaturated lipid layer and subsequently disrupts cellular integrity. Between pH levels of 3 and 6, the predominant species is HOCl that has maximal antimicrobial properties.29 , 30
HOCl is a powerful oxidizing agent.
HOCl also destroys viruses by chlorination by forming chloramines and nitrogen-centered radicals, resulting in single- as well as double-stranded DNA breaks, rendering the nucleic acid useless and the virus harmless.31
HOCl can be made on-site combining non-iodinated salt, water, and electrolysis.
The parameters that contribute to HOCl’s efficacy as a disinfectant include contact time and concentration.32, 33, 34 The method of application also will affect its efficacy to disinfect.

What Makes This So Good?
Simply put, HOCl is clean and effective, safe for humans and for the environment.
Added to this is the recommendation within the World Health Organization (“WHO”) that has published the following recently:
Application for Inclusion in the 2021 WHO Essential Medicines List
We request that Aqueous Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) be added to the core Essential Medicines List to address priority conditions in Categories 15.1 and 15.2 (Disinfectant and Antiseptic products), and Category 13 (Wound Care).
HOCl has emerged in the current pandemic as the most potent and environmentally safe disinfectant available and with a wide range of efficacy against many human pathogens, including the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.8,36,37
In recent years compelling evidence of the potency of pure, stable preparations of HOCl in the inactivation of even the most resistant infectious agents … has made it clear that HOCl deserves a place in every public health program as a fundamental instrument of infectious disease control.117
Large volumes of cost-effective disinfectants are going to be necessary from now onwards for addressing
pandemic requirements and in heightened awareness of infectious diseases worldwide.18,41
High purity HOCl products permit safe application of a highly effective disinfectant with no risks to patients or staff – even allowing operators to forego PPE use.24,29

The last point from above is most likely worth repeating:
High purity HOCl products permit safe application of a highly effective disinfectant with no risks to patients or staff – even allowing operators to forego PPE use.24,29
So (and as the logic would proceed), if it is good enough to fight the pandemic, then it is probably good enough for countless other applications as well.
In terms of the broader application of HOCl, we see testimonials such as this:
Electrolyzed water (ie. hypochlorous acid) is an all- natural, no-rinse, non-toxic, non-irritant and environmentally safe antimicrobial solution that is the product of 3 simple ingredients. Hypochlorous Acid aka Electrolyzed Water is the electrochemical reaction of water, salt, and electricity. It serves as a potent antimicrobial agent, approximately 100 times as effective as chlorine bleach.
When HOCl is applied on food or contact surfaces, it behaves as an oxidizing agent. When reduced by organic matter, it leaves no harmful residues and therefore no potable water post-rinse is required. The aforementioned features make electrolyzed water (hypochlorous acid) a superior operational solution for any food-service provider, saving time and resources and enabling frequent, real-time application.
There are a broad range of applications for the use of this technology in industries such as agriculture, food and beverage, hospitality, healthcare, and water treatment. Electrolyzed water can be safely and efficiently utilized through a variety of methods such as direct application, pressure spraying, dosing, and fogging.

Why is HOCl so Important in Water Pipes?
The reason for safe HOCl to be used immediately is that corroded and rusted water pipes can cause cancer. We look to this source for more authority on the subject:
Common pipe alloy can form cancer-causing chemical in drinking water
Rusted iron pipes can react with residual disinfectants in drinking water distribution systems to produce carcinogenic hexavalent chromium in drinking water, reports a study by engineers at UC Riverside.
Chromium is a metal that occurs naturally in the soil and groundwater. Trace amounts of trivalent chromium eventually appear in the drinking water and food supply and are thought to have neutral effects on health. Chromium is often added to iron to make it more resistant to corrosion.
Dental offices are now using HOCl to clean its water lines. We can probably all recall when HIV contaminated water and pipes infected various patients at the outset of that particular virus. There is now a clean and cost-effective solution that is being promoted by the NIH:
Dental unit waterlines disinfection using hypochlorous acid-based disinfectant
New dental unit waterlines were installed in 13 dental chairs, and biofilm was allowed to grow for 10 days.
Disinfection treatment procedure was carried out in the 12 units, and one unit was left untreated. The dental unit waterlines were removed and analyzed using the scanning electron microscope (SEM) (TESCAN VEGA3 SBU).
Result:
On examination, SEM images showed that there was no slime layer or bacterial cells seen in any of the 12 cut sections obtained from the treated dental waterlines which mean that there was no evident of biofilm formation. Untreated dental unit waterlines showed a
microbial colonization with continuous filamentous organic matrix. There was significant biofilm formation in the control tube relative to the samples.
Conclusion:
The tested disinfectant was found to be effective in the removal of biofilm from the dental unit waterlines.
Then we find this from the entity known as “SafeWater”:
Electrolysis of common salt with a dividing membrane between the electrodes results in two separate solutions suitable for sanitation (Anolyte) and CIP (Catholyte) – hypochlorous acid (HOCL) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) being the main constituents.
Hypochlorous acid, a weak acid that also occurs naturally in the body to combat infection, is a powerful sanitizer and cleaning agent that is substantially more effective than hypochlorite.
It sanitizes rapidly and effectively without the need for heating. This new technology revolutionizes CIP procedures. It helps reduce carbon footprint, shortens changeover time and saves energy as well as the costs of expensive, formulated chemicals. The process of deposit removal is fast and effective without the need for heating.
The fundamentals of using natural drinking water with just a bit of food salt added and applying an electrical current to produce a natural disinfectant that is
identical with nature’s own have elevated the status of natural disinfection in the dairy, food and beverage industries as an environmentally friendly solution.
The fact that the process is based upon simple electrolysis using only natural ingredients such as water and salt means that SafeWater is a truly sustainable solution.

The State of Michigan, one that has had many water challenges in recent years, has published a clean water guide that includes the following insert:
Chlorine dissolved in water, regardless of whether sodium hypochlorite or calcium hypochlorite is used as the source of the chlorine, generally exists in two forms, depending on the pH of the water:
HOCl – hypochlorous acid (biocidal) OCl – hypochlorite ion (oxidative)
Hypochlorous acid is 100 times more effective as a disinfectant than the hypochlorite ion. It is generally thought that the death of bacterial cells results from hypochlorous acid oxidizing essential bacterial enzymes, thereby disrupting the metabolism of the organism. In addition, hypocholous acid has a small molecular size and is electrically neutral, thereby allowing rapid penetration through a cell wall.
The hypochlorite ion is not as strong an oxidizing agent as hypochlorous acid and the negative charge of the ion impedes its ability to penetrate an organism’s cell wall. Hence, the hypochlorite ion is not a s effective a disinfectant agent as hypochlorous acid.

Indeed, it seems “too good to be true,” but all of the scientific data point to the fact that properly balanced electrolyzed water (with the appropriate equipment and dosing, of course) can resolve a wide variety of water- related issues, including the grimy and filthy biofilm that occupies, collects, and invades the pipes of potable water. Needless to say, it’s very important—if not imperative—to cleanse water pipes so as to effectively remove biofilm.
The NIH also published this finding about another biofilm cleaner for water pipes known as muramidase:
Elimination of the formation of biofilm in industrial pipes using enzyme cleaning technique
In the water treatment process, traditional CIP [“clean in place’] techniques can usually remove or sterilize microbes on the surface of pipes.
Slime-forming bacteria generally produce the thickest slime formations under aerobic (oxidative) conditions …
Growth may be recognized as a cloudy or gel-like growth …
However, when the biofilm forms in pipelines, the traditional methods would not be available to eliminate it completely [2]. By contrast, the strategy of using muramidase to remove the biofilm in pipes is more effective and in-depth.
But what is muramidase anyways?
A basic enzyme that is present in saliva, tears, egg white, and many animal fluids. It functions as an antibacterial agent.
Muramidase is also known as Lysozyme is an antimicrobial enzyme produced by animals that form part of the innate immune system. Muramidase is a glycoside hydrolase that catalyzes the hydrolysis of 1,4- beta-linkages between N-acetylmuramic acid and N- acetyl-D-glucosamine residues in peptidoglycan, which is the major component of the gram-positive bacterial cell wall. This hydrolysis in turn compromises the integrity of bacterial cell walls causing lysis of the bacteria.
Muramidase is abundant in secretions including tears, saliva, human milk, and mucus. Large amounts of muramidase can be found in egg white.

Typically used for animal feed, muramidase is considered to
be “safe” and “neutral.”

After this brief analysis, it would appear that hypochlorous acid—HOCl—is the safest, easiest and most cost-effective method for the cleansing of water pipes and through lines. This can be achieved by simple dosing procedures and the following of expert guidelines. Just as significant, HOCl can be made “on-site” and without a great deal of fanfare. In the end, HOCl is truly nature’s answer to an extremely effective and efficacious disinfectant that is safe for humans, plants, and animals, and contributes to a better overall environment.
